I grew up in Central
Queensland, Rockhampton, Keppel Sands and Biloela for exact places. I left High school first semester of my eleventh
year to take on my apprenticeship as a Mechanical Fitter and Turner, that was June 1995 I was 16. I have my father and my
apprenticeship to thank for the skills I have today.
Five years on and I was working for an equipment hire company called Wreckair Hire. My talent as a ''jack of all trades''
served me very well for the position of Branch mechanic/truck driver. Working for Wreckair saw me driving and flying all over
the place. Most memorable was my stint in the mines of northern Queensland,
particularly BHP Cannington and WMC Phosphate Hill.
Although working 12hr's a day for 14 days straight, having 24hr's off and then doing another 14 days takes it out of
you, but hey, the pay was good.
My working life is rather easy to catalogue, I did my apprenticeship, worked for Wreckair they got bought by Coates
Hire who till just recently I had worked for from 1999. Now I reside at Dumpex, a division of the Transpacific group, as a
fitter/mechanic.
In that short period of time I managed to fit in a serious obsession with one of the generals finest, EH holdens, they
are the equivalent to my Land Rover fetish.
I still own one a nice morwell grey sedan, albeit in a container in another state! Soon I will have it again!
Also
I had a 3 season career in speedway, that taught me that he who spends the most WINS!!!! I didn’t do too bad, I was
consistent but was always one or two places out or my favourite option parked on the infield picking up pieces of Holden block
and con rod....... the little engine that could sometimes couldn’t.
I’ve
had motor bikes, holdens and fords, a few boats, had a G60 Nissan patrol the ones that were made out of real metal, even VW’s.
Spent a lot of time at various swap meets in and around Queensland.
Dabbled in Drag cars and built a mud buggie with a good mate and generally modified anything I could get my hands on and chucked
numerous skids all over the place.
So,
28 years on, two states, countless flats, units and houses, more junk (read, really important stuff that will be worth something
or serve a purpose one day) that I can poke a stick at, A lovely wife, some really great mates and a recently purchased house,
I can say that’s its all good so far.
