I
bought old faithful to tow my speedway sedan around Brisbane. In the off season I found out just how exciting
this 4x4 caper actually was.
The
Disco, a series 1, 3.5L injected V8 auto wasn’t the best on fuel, but at the time fuel was only 86cents a litre!
Engine
mods were sparse, they included a modified air box and finer filter, rebuilt dizzy and re-located ignition module, 9mm spiral
wire HT leads and a 2.5’’ exhaust.
Originally
bought by its first owner in cairns FNQ, she made her way down the east coast to Brisbane,
Sydney and now somewhere in Melbourne.
For
the few years I owned her I only ever replaced the ignition module more than 3 times … and the fuel pump would play
up from time to time. Apart from the usual servicing and replacement of wheel bearings, brake pads and the like the disco
was quite reliable, despite the general consensus!
I
played around with springs and shocks, but only went 2’’ in lift. Built my first set of DWE sliders, over seven
years ago now, built and fitted a track rod guard, rear diff slider, front and rear bash plates.
Not
long before I was to sell her I bought a second hand Detroit
locker for the rear.
I
had the sun gears re splined form 10 to 24 spline and fitted the slightly bigger 24 spline axles. Not that I ever broke a
10 spline, it was more of a fit what was stronger for piece of mind. Still to this day I’ve never broken an axle in
a LR.
The
A/C system was re built before I left brissy bound for Sydney,
and subsequently a faulty hose crimp saw the gas escape into the ozone! So that was ripped out and replaced wit something
far more practical… a 7cfm York air compressor.
Very
very handy! I’m in the process of installing one in the 90.
